Success story from our Youth for Human Rights program:
Dear Chad,
Thank you for your time yesterday evening…I love talking with you!
I wanted to share with you an excerpt from an email written to me by my friend John Mshiri who is a teacher in a primary school in rural Kenya. The people in this area are known as Kitaita and there are five villages that surround a mountain known as Kasigau located in Eastern Kenya. Mt. Kasigau has 5 streams that flow from the mountain and that is why historically people came to this area. The Taita people are subsistence farmers for the most part and this means when there is a drought (which there has been for the better part of five years now) or elephants come onto their shambas (farms) and destroy their crops, the fruits of their labor vanish in one night so many are getting food aid. Many resort to poaching of wildlife and illegal activities when their survival is threatened.
My experience of working and living in this area for three years was that these people are extremely thirsty for knowledge that will help them to better there lives. The good news is that many of these people are learning to create better lives for themselves through micro-enterprises that supply them with an income when their sustenance is taken away.
I want to thank you and the [Church of Scientology Missouri] for giving me the Youth for Human Rights booklets to share with people in Kenya. I was able to share this with many individuals, schools and organizations I worked with throughout Kenya. As I walked around the villages I realized that the world has far to go with enforcing human rights but with each person that has this invaluable knowledge more human rights violations can be REPORTED. I am very happy to share with you the following excerpt from my dear friend John’s recent email to me:
“I was waiting for the books you gave, Newton handed them over to me some two weeks ago. They are informing and educating. I knew a bit of human rights, but I never knew they extend to 30. The books are relevant to our curriculum and I intend to donate two copies in your name to school libraries being built by Charles as I retain one copy for reference as I teach my pupils. They are a treasure and information therein empowers.” – John Mshiri, Teacher Jora Primary School Kenya
Well that says it all…”EMPOWERS”!!! Some people might say that we are so far from enforcing Human Rights around the world – why bother? And my thought immediately goes to the faces and dialogue that ensued after I gave the booklets out…it was wonderful to sit and hear their thoughts and ideas regarding how these materials could be utilized. Freedom does not come without Knowledge.
I don’t mean to sound like some trite greeting card with my sentiments but these are my friends, colleagues and [they inspire] me every day of my life. Chad thanks so much for helping me help empower them.
Warmest Regards,
M.D.
